Turkey introduces Green Logistics Certificate to promote sustainable freight transportation

In a bid to bolster environmentally friendly practices in the logistics sector, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Turkey has introduced the Green Logistics Certificate under the framework of the Combined Transport Regulation. This initiative aims to foster balanced, integrated, and sustainable freight transportation methods, contributing to a greener world.
Introduced in January 2023, the Green Logistics Certificate marked a pivotal step towards enhancing sustainability within the country’s logistics industry. To qualify for this certification, logistics companies in Turkey must meet a set of stringent criteria designed to promote eco-friendly operations. These include:
- Conducting a minimum of 200 combined freight transportation operations annually;
- Demonstrating that at least 5% of the company's energy consumption is sourced from renewable energy;
- Employing climate control systems that utilize refrigerants with low Global Warming Potential (GWP);
- Engaging in a minimum of 5% green packaging activities annually;
- Contributing a minimum of 500 saplings per year to afforestation efforts supervised by the General Directorate of Forestry;
- Implementing a zero-waste management system in compliance with the Zero Waste Regulation;
- Holding certifications such as ISO 14046 for Water Footprint Management, ISO 50001 for Energy Management, ISO 14001 for Environmental Management, and ISO 14064 for Greenhouse Gas Management.
Moreover, the SLog4.0 project aims to assist logistics companies in Turkey in meeting the requirements for obtaining the Green Logistics Certificate. Through this project, human resources will be trained to support companies in implementing sustainable practices effectively.
The introduction of the Green Logistics Certificate underscores the country’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development in the logistics sector, paving the way for a more eco-conscious future in freight transportation. .
